Window Cleaning in Autumn and Winter: Why It Pays Off
Most people think of window cleaning as something you do in spring. That makes sense: the sun comes back, and suddenly you can see every mark on the glass. But Copenhagen gets around seven hours of daylight on the shortest day of the year, and those are exactly the months when you most need the light you do get to actually come in.
That’s why we recommend a thorough clean in autumn, before winter sets in.
The low sun shows everything
From October to February the sun sits low in the sky. The light hits the glass from the side instead of from above, and that makes everything on it stand out: fingerprints, streaks from the last clean, and the thin grey film of dust and pollen the summer left behind.
The windows haven’t got dirtier. The light is simply showing them as they are. A clean in October or November removes the summer’s layer, so you go into the dark months with clear glass.
Winter dirt is a different kind of dirt
Winter adds something new: salt and sleet. Road salt is kicked up by traffic and settles as a dull film on ground-floor and lower-floor windows. If you live near the harbour, in Sydhavnen, on Islands Brygge or by Nordhavn, the wind carries salt off the water as well.
That kind of film doesn’t disappear with a rain shower. The rain just spreads it evenly across the glass. That’s why the winter clean is often the most important one of the year, and why we offer a visit every three months to customers who live on a busy street.
Can windows be cleaned in frost?
Inside, windows can be cleaned all year, whatever the weather.
Outside is different. In hard frost, water freezes on the glass before it can be wiped off, and you end up with streaks and ice instead of clear glass. So we schedule outside cleaning for a frost-free day. A normal Copenhagen winter has plenty of those, so you rarely have to wait long.
Condensation: it’s the frame that takes the damage
In winter, condensation often forms on the inside of the glass, especially in bedrooms and kitchens. It’s moisture from the air inside your home meeting the cold pane. The water runs down and collects at the bottom of the frame and on the sill.
Over time that leads to black spots in the corners of the frame and on the sill. That’s mould, and it sits in the wood and the joints, not on the glass. It’s one of the reasons our window cleaning covers not just the glass but also the frames, casings, hinges and sills. Many providers only do the glass, but the frame is where moisture and dirt settle.

Keeping windows clean between visits
A few small habits make a big difference in the dark months:
- Wipe condensation in the morning. A dry cloth or a small squeegee takes the water before it runs into the frame.
- Air the home two to three times a day for five to ten minutes. It lowers the humidity inside, so less condensation forms in the first place.
- Keep the sill clear. Plant pots and objects on the sill hold moisture and make it hard to wipe dry.
- Use a dry microfiber cloth for fingerprints. Water and spray cleaner often aren’t needed for small marks, and a dry cloth leaves no streaks.
What we do, and what we don’t
We clean windows inside and outside, including French doors and patio doors, and we clean the frames, casings, hinges and sills in the same visit. We bring all equipment and cleaning supplies ourselves.
We clean outside wherever we can reach safely with a standard ladder or from a balcony. If your windows need a lift, typically on higher floors without a balcony, we’ll say so honestly and refer you to a specialist with the right equipment.
You can read more about the full service on the window cleaning page, and see a before/after example from a real home in the gallery.
Remember the service deduction
Window cleaning is covered by the Danish servicefradrag, both inside and outside. In 2026 you can deduct up to DKK 18,300 per person in labour costs for household services, and the tax value is around 26%. You pay digitally and report the amount yourself. Our servicefradrag 2026 guide explains how.
Combine it with your regular cleaning
Many of our customers add window cleaning to their regular home cleaning, for example twice a year or every three months. That way the same person who already knows your home also does the windows.
